This series explores how the landscape can be weaponized to enact violence against marginalized communities. A pansy is both a flower and a derogatory term for a feminine gay man, making it simultaneously beautiful and inflammatory. Spotted with Pansies refers to a time in the artist’s life when, before coming out, he feared being seen with other homosexual men; afraid that this association would expose him as "one of them.”
Works from the Spotted with Pansies series can be acquired through de Montigny Contemporary.
Spotted with Pansies was presented at the Niagara Artists Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario. The exhibition transformed the gallery into an immersive environment, extending polka dots across the walls to overwhelm the space and test the limits of good taste. In saturating the gallery architecture, the installation renders Queerness structurally load-bearing, mimicking its frequent framing as ostentatious and suffocating.
